First, they let you win.
This machine hands out hope on a schedule. An early win feels like proof that luck is on your side. After that, every coin buys a reason to try again. Outside this artwork, the same loop can lead to debt, lost control and damaged relationships.
The credits here are imaginary. The costs beyond the screen are real.
Place your bets.
Money is only part of what ends up on the table.
These chips are make-believe. What people lose away from the table is not.
Beyond the machine
Research puts numbers to the harm. These estimates describe different populations and measures.
of adults worldwide are estimated to have a gambling disorder, according to the World Health Organization.
WHO, 2024of adults who used online casinos or slots in the previous year were estimated to experience problematic gambling in a 2024 study.
The Lancet Public Health, 2024The first estimate concerns all adults worldwide; the second concerns adults who used online casinos or slots. They are not directly comparable.
Gambling goes beyond casinos.
Research cited by The Lancet Public Health Commission estimated past-year gambling participation at:
This includes lotteries, betting and other forms of gambling. Taking part does not, on its own, mean someone has an addiction.
Online slots can be played almost anywhere, at any hour. WHO identifies rapid play, easy access and marketing as factors that can increase harm. A person does not need a diagnosis to be affected. The Lancet Commission, 2024 · WHO, 2024
One national snapshot: Russia.
In February 2026, Russian polling agency VCIOM asked 1,600 adults about legalising online casinos in Russia. This is public opinion in one country, not a global estimate of gambling harm.
The losses do not stop with the player.
WHO cites an estimate that each person gambling at high risk affects six other people on average. Financial strain and relationship breakdown can spread through a household. This measures the wider impact, not six additional diagnoses. Source: WHO
In a 2025 survey by Russian polling organisation FOM, 15% said they knew someone with a gambling addiction; 78% viewed it as an illness requiring professional help. These are the views of 1,500 adults, not a measure of how many people have an addiction. Source: FOM, 8 July 2025 (in Russian)
When playing stops being a choice.
WHO describes gambling disorder in terms of impaired control, gambling taking priority over other activities, and continuing despite harm. Debt or chasing losses can be reasons to seek help; one sign alone is not a diagnosis. Support and professional care offer more than a demand to “just stop”.
At least the treasury wins.
On 23 October 2026, Russia’s Finance Ministry said it was considering legalising online casinos under rules similar to those for bookmakers. This was a proposal under discussion, not an enacted decision. Read the report in Kommersant (in Russian).
A convenient way to keep the books: someone’s losses become someone else’s revenue. Here, even the debt is imaginary. Away from this screen, the bill can follow you home.
