Light, shadow and glass

Visual web design trends for 2025

The web is no longer flat. If previously the designer’s goal was to create something “clean and neat,” now it is to create depth, materiality and emotion. The year 2025 has finally formalized the transition from static interfaces to living visual systems, where light and shadow work no worse than text.

Light, shadow and glass

The Age of Glass: Transparency as a Tool of Perception

Glassmorphism is not just a decorative technique. It has become a symbol of interfaces, where transparency is a metaphor for openness. Blurred backgrounds, soft gradients, glare panels create a feeling of lightness and air.

Why is this needed:
– helps to visually separate blocks without hard contours;
– adds volume and hierarchy without overloading;
– works well on dark themes where light passes through the content rather than on top of it.

What's important:
Transparency must be functional. If the user loses readability, then it’s not glass—it’s smoke. Check contrast and readability on mobile devices: this is where the effect most often breaks.

Light and neon: a game on the verge of futurism and minimalism

Glow effects, soft highlights, contour highlights are elements that return interest to visual expressiveness. They replaced the aggressive gradients and acidic palettes of the beginning of the decade.

Modern glow works differently:
– it does not scream, but breathes;
– is used pointwise – around active elements, buttons, cursor, text;
– often combined with dark UI to enhance contrast.

This style is increasingly seen in digital branding, especially among technology companies, where light symbolizes intelligence, energy and movement.

Shadow as a language of structure

Flat design killed shadows, but now they are making a comeback—not as an effect, but as a tool.
Depth no longer looks like “cheap realism” from the 2010s. New shadows - soft, diffused, with different densities and directions.

Shadow now means:
– priority (the pop-up element is highlighted not by color, but by light level);
– interaction (the behavior of objects in the interface space);
– naturalness (the site is not static, but breathes with the user).

Moreover, modern interfaces imitate physical lighting: the light source can move when scrolled or hovered. This creates a feeling of “live” content - almost like in the real world.

3D without excess: depth through details

3D has ceased to be an end in itself. In 2025, volume is used not for the “wow” effect, but for the sake of context.
Minimalistic 3D icons, animated logos, smooth transitions between planes create depth of perception without visual noise.

Trend: web design ceases to be a 2D slide, turning into a scene.

Lightweight WebGL solutions, Three.js, Rive and Lottie animations are used - all this helps to add interactivity with minimal load.

Dark interfaces and light contrast

The dark theme has become a standard, but now it is not about “fashionable”, but about energy.
The contrast of light and darkness is used to create meaning: where there is attention, there is brightness. This creates a “focal architecture” - the user is literally guided by light through the interface.

Important to remember:
– avoid a uniform glow, the eye gets tired;
– use local light sources, as in photography;
– don’t be afraid of black colors: it can be noble if it is balanced in temperature and depth.

Materiality versus illusion

The main idea of 2025: visual should not be “beautiful”, it should feel real.
Sites are moving away from stereotypes and decorativeness - instead, they are built on sensations: weight, softness, transparency, warmth of light.

This brings the digital interface closer to the physical experience. A person doesn’t just see a site - he feels what it is “made of”.

Output

2025 is the year when visual style is no longer just “decoration.” Light, shadow and glass have become part of the language of interaction.

If earlier the design answered the question “what does it look like?” , now it answers the question “how does it feel?” .

Liquid glass

Liquid Glass burst into design - and then disappeared.

At first it seemed like just another feature for the sake of a feature. Then - something truly new. And now Apple has already “fixed” the effect, making it more boring. Let's figure out where Liquid Glass came from, why it hooked everyone, and how marketers ruined everything again.
